Hunt singles before clever patterns
Scan each house for a digit that fits only one empty cell, or a cell that has only one remaining candidate. Those naked and hidden singles are free progress. Clearing them opens new singles elsewhere, so repeat the scan after every placement instead of jumping to advanced tricks too soon.
Keep pencil notes honest
Candidates only help when they stay accurate. After you place a digit, remove it from every peer cell in the same row, column, and box. Messy notes hide singles and invent false pairs. If a house becomes noisy, pause and rewrite candidates for that house alone.
Lock pairs and focus one digit
When two cells in a house share the same two candidates, those digits are locked there—erase them from the rest of the house. Alternating with digit focus also helps: pick one number from 1 to 9 and mark every place it can still go across the grid. That often reveals a box-line reduction or a forced fill.
Treat hints as lessons, not autopilot
A hint fills a correct empty cell so you can continue, but it does not teach the reason. Before you accept it, ask which house forced that digit. Racing your local best time rewards clean scanning more than frequent hints, because the timer keeps running either way.
