How to play 2048

Every move slides all tiles in one direction. Merge equal tiles to grow numbers, and keep the board breathing.

1. Swipe or press an arrow key — every tile slides as far as it can in that direction.
2. Two tiles with the same number collide and merge into one tile of double the value, adding it to your score.
3. After each move, a new 2 (or occasionally 4) appears in a random empty cell.
4. Reach the 2048 tile to win — then keep going for 4096 and beyond if you like.
5. When the grid is full and no merge exists in any direction, the game ends.

2048 strategy tips

• Pick a corner and swear loyalty to it — keep your biggest tile there and never slide away from it.
• Use only two or three directions for most of the game; the forbidden direction is what keeps your corner safe.
• Build a snake: descending values in a chain from the corner so each merge feeds the next.
• Never make a move that lifts your anchor tile out of its corner unless it is genuinely forced.
