Play Xiangqi with Two Players

Xiangqi pieces and how they move

Start with the red set below. Black uses the same disc shapes with different characters: 将, 士, 象, 馬, 車, 砲, and 卒.

General · 帅One point orthogonally inside its own palace. The two generals may not face on an open file.

Advisor · 仕One point diagonally, only inside the palace.

Elephant · 相Exactly two points diagonally. It cannot cross the river, and a piece on the midpoint blocks it.

Horse · 马One point straight, then one diagonally. A piece on the first point hobbles it.

Chariot · 车Any number of points along an open rank or file.

Cannon · 炮Moves like a chariot; to capture, it must jump exactly one screen.

Soldier · 兵One point forward. After crossing the river, it may also move one point sideways, never back.
